Flight International Online news 09:00GMT: Mexican low-cost start-up carrier Vuela has ordered 16 Airbus A319s and placed 34 options.

The Toluca-based airline, which is closely linked to central American carrier Taca, plans to start flying early next year with aircraft leased from Taca before deliveries of the new machines begin.

Taca chief operating officer Enrique Beltranena has been appointed CEO of the new carrier where he will oversee an aggressive market launch in competition with at least three other serious low-cost start-ups in the country.

Vuela has substantial financial backing from several of Mexico's most prominent businessmen, including Televisa's Emilio Azcarraga, as well as a personal investment by Taca chairman Roberto Kriete's family representing 25% of the equity.

No engine selection for the aircraft has been made.
