Iraqi Airways is said to be near to signing a contract to acquire 40 passenger aircraft from Boeing with which to rebuild the airline’s network.

The Arabic Al-Sabaah newspaper cites a statement from the Iraqi ministry of transport which says it will sign a contract “soon” for the purchase of 40 aircraft of “various sizes” which will be added to the fleet of Iraqi Airways.

These aircraft, the ministry adds, will be introduced in 2013-14 and will be used to re-open several air routes between Baghdad and Arab cities, as well as countries beyond the Middle East.

It has not detailed the types of aircraft which will feature in the agreement but values the deal at $6 billion.
