Boeing's plans to launch the 777-200X/300X development, possibly with a tail-mounted auxiliary power and thrust unit (APTU), took a further step forward on 25 August when its product development team reported study plans to the company's Office of the President.

No hurdles were raised as a result of the status report to the senior management team, which clears the way towards design definition by the December target date, says the company.

Boeing plans to complete the performance studies to secure customers and firm up the configuration by the first quarter of 2000. Entry-into-service is still being targeted for mid-2002.

The performance enhancement studies include the unconventional use of an APTU, which would double as a boost engine for take-off and an auxiliary power unit. Other possible elements of the upgrade include lift/drag improvements for better take-off and stopping.
