The Regional Walloon Government is to extend the runway at Brussels South Charleroi Airport by 650m (2,130ft) to 3,200m. The extension is being coupled with the planned construction of a new passenger terminal. The long-term development of Brussels South will also be facilitated by large public investments in road and rail infrastructure, including a planned direct rail link to Brussels. Aer Rianta, the Irish Government owned company which manages Dublin Airport, is to be given a greater role in co-ordinating flights in a move which could prove an interim stage to the introduction of slot control at the airport. Ireland's transport minister is about to give Aer Rianta greater control over scheduling at Dublin, which is handling more than 14 million passengers annually. The move follows a row between Aer Rianta and Aer Lingus after a weekend of serious congestion in the terminal building and over delays in moving into a new terminal extension. Johannesburg's Lanseria International Airport, Africa's busiest general aviation hub, is to undergo a R100-million ($14 million) upgrade over the next three years including a R40 million new passenger terminal. Demolition of the present terminal will provide more apron space enabling Lanseria to accommodate up to three 180-seat aircraft. Work on the new terminal is to be commissioned next year, while apron extensions will be completed by March 2002.
