The prospect of supersonic business travel dominated the news agenda as NBAA prepared to kick off on Monday. On Tuesday, as the show formally began, the focus switched to the other end of the spectrum, with the potential for electric power technologies.
Safran unveiled that it is working on a possible flight test of an electric motor demonstrator within two years, while technology disruptor Uber has been talking up its own initiatives in the area of green urban transport.
There were also celebrations at the opening ceremony, with the National Business Aviation Association hailing as a victory the decision to abandon a proposal to privatise the US air traffic control system. The NBAA has run a strong campaign for two years against a move that president Ed Bolen had described as an existential threat to the business aviation community by putting unfair power in the hands of airlines.
