Tokyo will receive the full allotment of nine Northrop Grumman E-2D Hawkeye airborne early warning & control (AEW&C) aircraft originally announced last year.

A 26 September statement from the US Department of Defense navy awarded $1.4 billion to Northrop for the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) deal.

The contract award comes one year after the original FMS deal was announced.

Cirium fleets data shows that the Japan Air Self Defense Force has one E-2D in service, and the contract award brings its total firm orders for the E-2D to 12.

Tokyo operates 13 E-2Cs with an average age of 32.4 years.
