German motoring organisation ADAC has ordered Eurocopter EC135 and EC145 full-flight simulators from CueSim to equip its new helicopter emergency medical services training academy at Bonn-Hangelar airfield.

The two simulators will be qualified to Level B under European regulations for helicopter training devices, allowing 85-90% of pilot training to be moved from the aircraft to the motion-based simulator, says David Burgoyne, sales and marketing manager with UK-based CueSim, a subsidiary of technology company Qinetiq.

One simulator for the analogue-cockpit EC135, reconfigurable between the Pratt & Whitney Canada-powered P2 and Turbomeca-powered T2 and upgradable to the P2i/T2i, will be delivered in June 2008. The other, reconfigurable between the glass-cockpit EC145 and EC135P2i/T2i, will be delivered in September 2008.

Burgoyne says the Level B simulator, with six-axis electric motion and 60º x 210º visual system, can provide 90% of the training capability of a Level D full-flight simulator at a quarter to a third of the cost. "Most helicopter customers want motion, but they do not need zero flight time," he says.
