ERJ-145

Embraer and Ericsson have teamed to develop and market an AEW version of the RJ-145 regional jet. The first customer is the Brazilian air force, which has ordered five ERJ-145ASs for the SIVAM Amazon-surveillance programme. Deliveries will begin in 1999.

The aircraft will be equipped with Ericsson's Eri-eye phased-array radar, with the 8m-long antenna mounted longitudinally above the fuselage, and mission system. Aerodynamic flight testing will begin in late 1998.

Three ERJ-145RS remote-sensing variants of the aircraft are also being acquired by the Brazilian air force for the SIVAM programme.

EMB-312 TUCANO

Production of the EMB-312 turboprop trainer continues against a French air force order for 80 aircraft. Embraer has received orders for 653 Tucanos, including 135 built by Shorts for the UK and powered by the 820kW AlliedSignal TPE331, replacing the basic aircraft's 560kW Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A. The EMB-312 was first flown in August 1980.

EMB-314 SUPER TUCANO

Two versions of the uprated Super Tucano, formerly designated the EMB-312H, are being developed: the EMB-314 turboprop trainer; and the AL-X light-attack aircraft, 100 of which will be produced for Brazil's SIVAM Amazon-surveillance programme. First flown in May 1993, the EMB-314 is powered by an uprated Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68 turboprop, producing 930kW in the trainer and 1,190kW in the attack version.

The AL-X armed version will be produced in single-seat A-29 and two-seat AT-29 variants, and will be equipped with an Elbit weapon system including head-up display and two flat-panel multi-function displays. Two 0.50mm machine guns will be mounted in the wing and five underwing stations will carry a range of weapons, including Brazil's Mechtron MAA-1 Piranha infrared-guided short-range air-to-air missile. Deliveries to the Brazilian air force will begin in 1999. The AL-X will be used also to replace EMB-326 Xavante advanced jet trainers, licence-built Aermacchi MB326s.
