Russian flag-carrier Aeroflot's wholly-owned southern airline, Aeroflot-Don, is to be rebranded under the new name Donavia.

Aeroflot says the decision is part of a strategy to develop its subsidiaries under independent brands.

Donavia will evolve as a "distinct" operation in the region, it adds, supplying trunk and regional air services to the southern districts.

The airline, which is based at Rostov-on-Don, will continue to codeshare and co-operate with Aeroflot.

Aeroflot says Donavia is implementing a new business plan to "ensure the dynamic development of the company" and satisfy southern Russia's needs for a quality airline.

While Aeroflot says the measure will enable it to clarify its brand position in the market, the airline had previously been concerned about its name being tarnished by the Aeroflot-Nord accident in Perm a year ago.

Aeroflot subsequently initiated plans to rename its affiliates, and it says that this procedure is still continuing.
