Passengers evacuated a United Airlines Boeing 787-9 using emergency slides at Los Angeles International airport on 2 March after an apparent engine fire.
The aircraft, operating flight 2127 to Newark, took off from Los Angeles International at 10:43 local time and ascended to 18,000ft before descending and returning to Los Angeles.
Powered by twin GE Aviation GEnx turbofans, the jet (registration N24972) landed at about 11:20 local time and was met by emergency vehicles.
Images posted to social media appear to show damage to the jet’s left-side GEnx. Video taken from inside the jet shows passengers evacuating the 787 via emergency slides on its right side.
The 787’s pilots “returned to Los Angeles to address a possible engine fire”, United says, adding that the 256 passengers aboard the jet “deplaned via slides and airstairs and were bused to the terminal.
“No serious injuries were reported,” United adds.
The Federal Aviation Administration says it is investigating.
Neither the FAA nor United discloses more information.
