Tranche 2 Eurofighter Typhoons will be delivered with upgraded control units for their Eurojet EJ200 engines designed to support the future introduction of a thrust-vectoring capability.
The digital engine control and monitoring unit (DECMU) replaces separate control and monitoring units used on Tranche 1 examples of the fighter.
The DECMU will control all engine functions including throttles and afterburners and will monitor and record performance data and other information such as lubrication levels.
It has also been designed to accommodate future engine changes including thrust vectoring.
"It is just a matter of switching software for the DECMU to operate with any future additional engine functions such as vectoring," says one of the control unit's suppliers, MTU Aero Engines.
The DECMU could also be retrofitted to Tranche 1 aircraft.
