Brazilian authorities are investigating after a bullet was discovered lodged in the left wing of a LATAM Airlines Brazil Boeing 767-300ER.

The bullet was found during scheduled maintenance of the aircraft. The airline has notified Brazil's federal police and civil aviation authority ANAC and is co-operating with their investigations, says the carrier in a statement.

It reiterates that the safety of the airline's operations was not compromised.

The aircraft, registered PT-MSY, is undergoing pre-scheduled maintenance. It was delivered to LATAM in 2012, Flight Fleets Analyzer shows.

PT-MSY was the first aircraft of LATAM to fly with the group's new livery in May 2016, when it operated a special flight to Geneva to collect the Olympic flame for Rio de Janeiro's hosting of the Olympic Games last year.
