Amid the multimillion-dollar kit on show at the static, Stemme's S10-VT motor glider stands out.

The $380,000 Rotax 912-powered aircraft is pitched at the many working pilots who have a professional interest in the top-end jets but fly recreationally, says "Glider" Bob Saunders, sales representative for the S10's San Diego-based distributor.

The German-built hybrid has several features not found on motor gliders, including a two-blade, variable-pitch propeller that retracts mid-flight when the engine is switched off, a retractable undercarriage, and 23m wings which fold to make the aircraft easier to store.

The aircraft has been on the market for about 14 years and around 500 are in operation, including 60 in North America.
