Swiss maintenance specialist SR Technics has opened a training centre in Abu Dhabi.

The MRO provider says the new campus builds on existing partnerships with several Middle Eastern carriers for which SR Technics has trained technicians since 2008, and that the site will supplement existing training facilities in Zurich.

Located in Masdar City near Abu Dhabi's main airport, the site will be used to provide basic maintenance and aircraft type training, special courses, and consultancy services.

Practical training on aircraft is to be conducted at the airport.

"We chose this location because it is a progressive hub for educational, technical and scientific institutions," says SR Technics's head of training services Stephan Wiegelmann.

Earlier this year, SR Technics arranged with Swiss to transfer part of the MRO's apprenticeship programme to the airline, which is establishing a technical unit to conduct checks in-house.

SR Technics was until recently a wholly owned subsidiary of Abu Dhabi investment fund Mubadala.

China's HNA Group then acquired an 80% shareholding in SR Technics. The remainder is held by Mubadala.
