PRATT & WHITNEY IS testing its PW4090 turbofan, the latest high-thrust version of the PW4000 which, rated at 400kN (90,000lb) take-off thrust, is destined to power Boeing's high- gross-weight 777-200 wide-body twinjet.
The East Hartford, Connecticut-based company hopes to obtain US Federal Aviation Administration certification for the engine by the middle of 1996, clearing the way for service entry early the following year.
The company says that certification can be completed in just one year because "...many of the earlier tests to certify the PW4084 were conducted at [thrust] levels above 90,000lb".
The PW4090 core will be further developed for incorporation in the PW4098 engine, which will power the 777-300 "stretch".
Although retaining the basic PW4090 core says P&W, this engine will deliver 436kN, with the addition of one supercharging stage to the low-pressure compressor, and a new aerodynamic design for the engine's fan, which will be held at the same 2.8m diameter.
The PW4098 is scheduled for certification in 1997, followed by entry into service on the 777-300 in 1998.
