Safran Helicopter Engines has performed the first ground run of its Tech TP turboprop powerplant, a technological demonstrator based on its Ardiden 3 turboshaft.

Developed as part of the EU's Clean Sky 2 programme, the test took place at Safran's Tarnos, France facility on 12 June.

Tech TP is designed to validate the technologies required to develop a next-generation turboprop to power short-range regional or business aviation aircraft.

Safran's future powerplant would be a challenger to the GE Aviation Catalyst and Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6.

Tech TP will test the complete propulsion system, including nacelle, air intake and propeller. It will also evaluate the case for more “electric” technologies, notably in the accessory gearbox and propeller controller components, says Safran.

The Ardiden 3 is a turboshaft in the 1,700-2,000shp (1,270-1,490kW) power range.
