The second quarter of the year saw a very slight improvement in the delay rates for Association of European Airlines (AEA) members compared with the same period last year. However, the percentage of delays attributable to airports and air traffic control (ATC) - increased to 72.4% from 71.9% in the same quarter in 2000. The national ATC systems responsible for the worst delays were Germany, followed by France and then the UK. The AEA says that this represents "a significant deterioration" of performance in Germany and the UK.
Athens Spata has the dubious distinction of overtaking Milan Malpensa to take number one spot as it grapples with start-up problems and the move to Spata. Milan Malpensa has now appeared in the top three for eight of the last 10 reports, while Brussels made its third appearance.
