The US Senate has confirmed General Mark Welsh as the US Air Force’s next chief of staff.

Welsh will succeed outgoing USAF chief Gen Norton Schwartz on 10 August.

But before Welsh can assume the top job, US President Barrack Obama must first formally appoint him.

“I fully accept the responsibility to stand beside secretary of the air force Michael Donley and lead the 690,000 active, guard, reserve and civilian airmen who selflessly serve our nation as part of an unbeatable joint team," Welsh says.

Welsh previously served as the head of the US Air Forces in Europe (USAFE).
