Slovakian-based development firm Klein Vision has unveiled a production prototype of its AirCar, a road vehicle capable of converting to an aircraft.

The AirCar – which has been granted a certificate of airworthiness – has conducted over 170h of flight testing, including more than 500 take-offs.

It is able to transform automatically from a road car to an aircraft in around 2min.

The AirCar features composite structures and a 280hp engine.

Klein says the vehicle is the ‘pinnacle’ of 30 years of development

“With the launch of our production prototype, we are one step closer to transforming how the world moves – merging the road and the sky into a new dimension of personal mobility,” says Stefan Klein, inventor of the Air Car.

Klein Vision says the prototype “builds on years of rigorous testing and technical refinement”. It adds that the vehicle is designed for “commercial scalability”.

Automatic transformation to the aircraft configuration takes about 2min

At an aviation awards event in Beverly Hills, the company stated that the pre-production model – designated AirCar 2, with 150kt cruise speed and 600nm range – would conduct its maiden flight at the end of summer.

AirCar co-founder Anton Zajac says it is a “true dual-mode vehicle” and believes it will put Klein Vision “at the forefront” of the emerging global air mobility sector.
