The expansion of Madeira's Funchal airport has been completed, which includes the extension of the airport's novel suspended runway. The new structure - partly elevated 60m (197ft) above sea level - increases the runway length to 2,780m, enabling the airport to accommodate Boeing 747s. The $420 million project includes a new terminal complex which is due for completion in 2002, and will almost double capacity.
