Bahrain International Airport is reporting a large increase in passenger and cargo traffic with Iran.

The number of airlines operating to and from Iranian destinations is now seven. The three latest carriers to offer services are all Iranian - Kish Air, Mohann Air and Qeshm Air. They join Gulf Air, Iran Air, Asseman and Iran Air Tours which were already operating on Bahrain-Iran routes. Destinations in Iran served from Bahrain include Tehran, Mashad, Shiraz, Kish Island, Kermanshah, Qeshm Island and Lar.

The growth in services to and from Iran comes against the background of a steady rise in the total number of passengers handled by Bahrain airport - in 2000 it reached close to 4 million, up 15% on 1999.

Bahrain airport, the second busiest in the Gulf after Dubai, is benefiting from the island's rapidly growing appeal as a tourism and shopping destination - as well as a major business centre.

Bahrain International Airport is working with Netherlands Airport Consulting (NACO) on a development plan, set for completion in September, focusing on developing passenger terminal facilities.
