Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has confirmed that one of its DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft operated by MASwings has crash landed near Kudat airport in Sabah.

The aircraft, registration 9M-MDM, was operating flight MH3002 from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat when the incident happened at 14:50 local time.

“The aircraft landed short of the runway in Kudat,” says MAS.

The carrier could not confirm the number of passengers and crew on board but said that there are no reported fatalities as yet.

Pictures online show the damaged aircraft lying in a vegetated area near a house and a road.

“The focus of the airline is on the rescue of passengers and crew,” says MAS, adding that it will continue to monitor the situation at the crash site.

Flightglobal Pro data shows that MASwings has three DHC-6 Twin Otters in its fleet, and the aircraft involved in the incident has been in service since 1983.

MASwings is the regional subsidiary of MAS.
