Brazilian carrier Gol has suspended all service to Venezuela, citing continuing issues repatriating currency from the country.

Calling the cessation of service “temporary”, an airline spokeswoman says Gol will not consider resuming flights until “the issue of repatriation of company resources in the country is resolved”.

Gol reduced frequency on its Caracas-Sao Paulo route to once weekly in late 2015, with executives saying in November that they were “studying the feasibility” of maintaining the flights.

Venezuela’s currency situation has impacted most foreign airlines. Air Canada ended service to the country in 2014 while American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines all significantly reduced their schedules that year.

Faced with no improvement to the situation in the foreseeable future, both American and Delta wrote-off their remaining cash in Venezuelan bolivars, totalling $592 million and $75 million, respectively, in the fourth quarter of 2015.
