Germany's Diehl is looking at strong growth in its aerospace business to offset the challenges facing its defence business.

In a presentation at the Diehl stand, company executives said the company's Diehl Aerosystems unit has experienced strong growth, aided by the company's participation in major Boeing and Airbus programmes.

Every month, the company provides parts for 120 aircraft globally, with equipment present on all Airbus and most Boeing types.

Meanwhile, the company's defence revenues declined 20% to €560 million ($750 million) in 2012 from a year earlier, on the back of weak defence spending in western Europe and the US.

Nonetheless, the defence business remained profitable and has made no cuts to its 3,600 staff.

Claus Gunther, chief executive of Diehl Defence, says it is key to retain people in order to retain expertise.
