Korean Air is to construct a new airframe MRO hangar at Seoul’s Incheon airport, with operations targeted to commence in 2029.

The new facility is part of a W176 billion ($119.5 million) joint investment between the SkyTeam carrier and airport operator Incheon International Airport Corporation.

Construction of the new facility – situated within Incheon airport’s High Tech Aviation Complex – will commence in 2027, following an agreement signing on 24 November.

Korean Air says the 69,299 sqm (745,928 sqft) facility can handle two widebody and one narrowbody aircraft at the same time. It will have capabilities for airframe inspections, component checks, as well as heavy maintenance and modification works.

“The project will allow Korean Air to further strengthen its world-class maintenance expertise and operational capabilities following the launch of the integrated carrier. With upgraded enhanced infrastructure and expanded capacity, the airline is well positioned to grow as a premier global MRO hub, driving the advancement and global competitiveness of Korea’s aviation MRO sector,” the carrier states.

The airframe MRO facility follows a series of investments made by Korean Air: it is building an engine MRO facility on Yeongjong island off Incheon, as well as an urban air mobility research and development centre in Bucheon.
