Propulsion specialist MTU Aero Engines is to suspend production at a number of its European facilities in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Germany-headquartered MTU says engine assembly and component manufacturing sites at Munich and in Rseszow, Poland, will be ramped down by the end of the week and will last for around 21 days.

One week after the first suspension comes into effect, MTU will end maintenance, repair and overhaul operations at its German shops in Hannover and Ludwigsfelde, near Berlin.

The deferral is necessary to allow the company “to complete shop visits and ensure an organised start to the suspension”, it says.

Operations at the sites are expected to be “reduced to an absolute minimum” for three weeks, says MTU.

The company says the suspensions are designed to protect its workforce and are a response to ”the first signals of difficulties in the supply chain” mainly relating to ”those regions most affected by the corona crisis”.

MTU has interests in several engine programmes and is a key partner in the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine, which is an option on Airbus A320neo-family aircraft.
