The European Union is to fund a second phase of European Space Agency-led studies into a hypersonic civil transport capable of flying from Brussels to Sydney in as little as 2h.

The Long Term Advanced Propulsion Concepts and Technologies (LAPCAT) study, which will end in April 2008, has concluded hydrogen is the best fuel.

To begin in October 2008, the four-year, €10 million ($14.2 million) LAPCAT II project will analyse the hydrogen-fuelled Mach 5 and Mach 8 transport concepts in more detail.

UK-based LAPCAT participant Reaction Engines last week presented a progress report on nozzle research for its M5 concept.
