NASA is working on maturing standards for developing and certifying civil unmanned aircraft, a top agency official says.
Right now there are no standards for certifying unmanned aircraft, says Chuck Johnson, a NASA official with the Dryden Flight Research Center. NASA also hopes to solve the issue of communication bandwidth allocations for civil UAS.
Until those issues are solved, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) cannot properly certify civil UAS. Unlike military and other government users, industry users cannot independently certify their aircraft.
Johnson says that unlike many other NASA projects, the agency hopes to make this a quick short-term project. NASA hopes to have concrete results by 2015 to 2020.
