The US government will likely hold fast to a 26 October deadline that would require passports with biometric identifiers for citizens of many of its major trading partners. Without the chips, the travellers would need visas for US visits. The UK and Japan will not meet the deadline, and only six European Union member states will be on time. Certain machine-readable passports will still be valid for US travel.
