QATAR AIRWAYS is raising the stakes in its competition with Dubai-based Emirates and the multi-national Gulf Air.

According to Qatar chief executive Sheikh Hamad bin Ali bin Jaber al-Thani, the airline is acquiring two ex-All Nippon Airways 747-200s from Boeing to facilitate a large-scale expansion of its network which now links Doha, the capital of Qatar, with 20 destinations in Europe, Africa and India.

The first aircraft was due for delivery on 27 July.
