Sikorsky is continuing its test and evaluation activities under the Matrix programme using its SARA S-76B demonstrator as the helicopter manufacturer looks for further commercial applications of its unmanned technology.
The rig approach system offered on the S-92 was derived from the Matrix research and Igor Cherepinsky, Sikorsky chief engineer for autonomy programmes, believes additional advances are likely for civil operators.
Helicopters with manned or unmanned capabilities “will happen within a few years certainly” depending on “customer interest”.
Discussions have taken place with operators, “to understand not what our technology will do but what the pilot community will accept and how quickly”.

Part of the effort will focus on simplified human-machine interface reducing the complexity that can afflict automated systems. “Never mind the 100s of options [presented to the pilot] , just tell the machine what you want it to do.”
SARA - or Sikorsky Autonomous Research Aircraft - has had additional sensors fitted, including LIDAR and cameras using different wavelengths, says Cherepinsky.
“It’s not just about detecting obstacles but to help the machine perceive the environment and give it as full an understanding of the world as we can,” he says.
