Japan is again considering terminating its acquisition of Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters amid growing budgetary constraints, but could buy a final batch of the Fuji Heavy Industries-assembled aircraft before pulling the plug. Tokyo included a request for seven more Apaches in its five-year budget plan, which began on 1 April, and Boeing believes it can secure approval for the multi-year acquisition to equip a full squadron. The US manufacturer and Fuji narrowly averted an army proposal to close the assembly line last year (Flight International, 16-22 March 2004).

Japan’s first two Apaches are on track for delivery in the first quarter of 2006, with a further four contracted last March under an unusual two-year procurement – Japan traditionally acquires aircraft annually. The original plans called for the delivery of 55 attack helicopters.
