The Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 turbofan has been selected by Hong Kong real estate tycoon, Joseph Lau, to power his Boeing 787-8 VIP twinjet.

This deal marks the first Trent-powered 787 VIP in Asia and the second time the engine has been selected over the rival General Electric GEnx powerplant for the VIP version, of which Boeing has secured seven orders to date.

The Trent 1000  is the launch engine for the 787 which is scheduled to roll out of  Boeing's Everett factory on 8 July and make its inaugural flight in September.

Rolls-Royce says: "The engine has now completed the majority of testing required for engine certification which is on track for later this year, before it powers the 787 on its maiden flight."

To date Boeing has secured over 500 orders for the 787 of which around 190 are Trent 1000-powered versions.

The aircraft is set to enter service in the middle of next year with Japan's All Nippon Airways.
