Aeromexico plans to relaunch services to Atlanta and at least two other US cities in 2012, as part of a plan to grow capacity by up to 13% next year.

The airline's CEO Andres Conesa said the carrier is re-starting flights to Atlanta from Mexico City and Monterrey "for sure", and is studying other US cities on the East Coast.

"We will be there in the summer or the third quarter of 2012," he said.

Aeromexico was serving Atlanta from Mexico City but dropped the service in 2009, when it began flights between Atlanta and Cancun, a route which was dropped as well subsequently.

The carrier plans to grow capacity by 12% to 13% in 2012, and increase capacity by 15% to 16% in the last quarter of this year.

Aeromexico will add nine aircraft to its fleet next year, comprising six Embraer E190s and three Boeing 737s, to close 2012 with at least 115 aircraft, said Conesa.

The growth in capacity in 2012 will be an even split between the domestic and international markets. Conesa noted that the airline was concentrating more on growing its international routes in the last 14 to 15 months, especially after the exit of Mexicana, which sought creditor protection in August 2010 and ceased operations afterwards.

Going forward, however, Aeromexico plans to grow international and domestic capacity evenly in 2012, instead of a 70-30 split this year.
