HDT Global is demoing for the first time its dual-arm MK 1 Highly Dexterous Manipulator at AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2011.

The model builds on a one-armed version the company released at the 2010 show in Denver.

Capable of lifting 110lb, compared to 50lb with one arm, the company's arms are currently outfitted on iRobot and QinetiQ ground systems.

"Our goal is to be platform-independent," says Joseph Gomes, manager of product engineering for HDT.

The company is currently taking orders for the system, which features 27 active joints per hand and offers haptic feedback through its hand-shaped, 11-degree-of-freedom joystick.

The system, though it has been through military research and development for the last two years, had its research origins in the prosthetics field.

New to the arm is an extender feature, the only joint on the product that allows for linear motion instead of rotational. Gomes says HDT can also create simpler or more complex versions of the hands of the system.
