A Lockheed Martin C-130J transport from the Italian air force's 46th Air Brigade at Pisa carried out a unique mission earlier this month - moving 8,000kg (17,600lb) of fresh fish from the island of Lampedusa to the mainland as storms left local fishermen unable to transport their catch by sea. Although they described the concept as technically feasible, procurement officials at the US Special Operations Command say they are no longer pursuing a kit that could modify the Lockheed Martin MC-130J for amphibious take-offs and landings, citing budget constraints and competing priorities.
