Berlin state authorities have set a 31 October deadline for the closure of the city's downtown Tempelhof airport. The announcement last week of a date is the first step towards the city's stated aim to close both Tempelhof and the city's main airport Tegel, and devote the former East German terminal at Schönefeld to all air traffic. Tempelhof, which was crucial to the allied air bridge operation following the second World War, is to be turned into a park, with its historic terminal buildings remaining.
