Security at this week's Commonwealth Games in Manchester, UK, has been boosted with the delivery of a Britten-Norman Defender 4000 aircraft to the Greater Manchester Police.
The £2.5 million ($3.9 million) Defender 4000 is derived from the UK's most successful civil aircraft, the legendary Islander. The Defender 4000, powered by two Rolls-Royce Allison engines, gives operators increased payload, greater endurance and more cabin volume. It has a top speed of 170kt (314km/h).
Isle of Wight-based Britten-Norman has found success among law enforcement agencies around the world with the Defender 4000. Its operating costs are a fraction of those of competing rotary wing types and its noise levels significantly lower.
The aircraft will be based with Greater Manchester Police's Air Support Unit at Manchester Airport.
