Honeywell has won the US Federal Aviation Administration contest to develop the GPS local-area augmentation system (LAAS). Raytheon and Thales were also competing. The $16.7 million first phase covers hardware and software design of the Category I LAAS. Options worth $340 million cover development and production. The first Cat I satellite landing systems are due to be operational by late 2006 at Chicago O'Hare, Houston Intercontinental, Juneau, Memphis, Phoenix and Seattle.
