There are many who claim that jaw, jaw, is preferable to war, war. It might not be conducive to the selling of aeroplanes, but it beats, hands down, the killing and maiming of people. There is something chillingly disturbing about your editorial comment, "Give war a chance" (Flight International, 21-27 January).

I am dismayed at your Comment "Give war a chance" (Flight International, 21-27 January) and your implication that a quick war with Iraq might be the best solution.

I fear you are playing straight into the hands of politicians with double standards. You seem to attach more importance to industry profits and the Western economy than the value of human life.

Let us not forget when it suits Western governments to prop up and support other brutal dictators in the world such as Chile's Gen Pinochet. And is it not these same Western governments that were perfectly happy to cash in on weapons sales to Iraq?

This commotion is primarily US self interest in that region and has nothing to do with justice, rule of law or terrorism.

Is Iraq the only country with "weapons of mass destruction" and is Saddam Hussein the only madman among the leaders of the world?
