L3 Communications (Stand B2 Hall 4) is demonstrating why the S/TAR Solid State Recorder is the instrument of choice for the US Navy in reconnaissance missions.

S/TAR harnesses commercial technology to record radar data, anti-submarine warfare data and infra-red extremely quickly. The recorder and has a storage capacity of 300 gigabytes and saves data at 2 gigabytes per second, making it the fastest machine of its kind.

The technology is utilised in the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet as used by the US Navy and exported to NATO countries.

Different

"What makes the S/TAR recorder different to any other machine is that we have taken microchips like those used in digital cameras and ‘ruggedised' them for use in more extreme environments," said David Micha, programme manager S/TAR Products.

The ‘ruggedisation' results in increased stability and large memory contained in a small unit with very low power needs.
