Alaska Airlines' order for 12 Boeing 737-400s, plus 12 options (Flight International, 25 September - 1 October) includes the right to switch the options for the new 737-800. The airline will take delivery of the firmly ordered 737s over three years from mid-1997. The 140-seaters will replace some of the airline's older McDonnell Douglas MD-80s on a one-for-one basis, as part of a move to simplify its fleet make-up, which will eventaully result in all the MD-80s being eliminated. Alaska flies 42 MD-80s, eight 737-200Cs and 25 737-400s.
