A UK automotive company has helped trim the weight of the Airbus A380. Coventry-based Altair Engineering's HyperWorks computer-aided engineering (CAE) software helped BAE Systems Aerostructures incorporate an innovative design into the leading edge wing section of the A380. The result was a 500kg mass saving from a small part of the wing. "Increasingly aggressive weight targets and shortening development timescales in the civil aircraft industry require a new approach to aircraft design," says Royston Jones, managing director of Altair, a member of the Midlands Aerospace Alliance (Hall 4, E7).
