Airbus expects to have its runway overrun protection system approved and available for retrofit on A320 series aircraft from early 2012. The system was approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency for the A380 in 2009.
Speaking at Flight International's Aviation Safety Conference at the Royal Aeronautical Society, London on 15 November, Airbus multi-programme project leader Fabrice Villaume said that the two airlines that have shown most interest in the system for the A320 series so far are Air France and Lufthansa, although neither has committed.
The software modification to incorporate the capability will be able to be installed in the hangar overnight, says Villaume.
