A US Air Force Boeing B-52H from the 96th Bomb Squadron was being used in an attempt to break the world speed record for flying 10,000km (5,400nm) unrefuelled, with a payload of 5,000kg, as Flight International went to press. On 25 August it was flown from Edwards AFB, California, to north-west Greenland before returning to Edwards, where it will drop 19 BDU-50 inert bombs at the base's precision impact range.
