The Belgian army's Light Aviation group moved a step towards integration with the country's Defence Air Component (formerly the Belgian air force) on 1 March, when it was renamed the Helicopter Wing. Its new structure will comprise four multirole combat, transport and medevac squadrons operating Agusta A109 light utility helicopters, with one of these to also serve as an Operational Conversion Unit. The service plans to gradually reduce its fleet of A109s from 44 to 32. A fifth squadron will continue to operate the ageing Aerospatiale SA318 Alouette II helicopter for liaison duties.
