British Midland is planning to put its pilots on part-time hours as it assesses the full impact of the events of 11 September. The British Air Line Pilots Association, the main UK pilots' union, is currently in talks with all of its members at the airline to implement a work-sharing plan under which many pilots would reduce their hours by up to 50%. BALPA says that it is optimistic that between pilots opting for this scheme and voluntary retirements, the 109 redundancies that BMI says it needs to make can be avoided.
