Honeywell has been granted US Federal Aviation Administration approval for two Bendix/King traffic awareness systems, which will be offered in a variety of safety systems for piston engine and light turbine aircraft. The systems include the KTA 870 Traffic Awareness System and the KMH 880 Multi-Hazard Awareness System. The KTA 870 actively interrogates nearby aircraft transponders and provides a cockpit traffic display and traffic alerts. It functions much like the TCAS traffic alert and collision avoidance system but at less than one-third the cost. The KMH 880 provides the same traffic detection capability as the KTA 870 in a system combined with a Class B terrain awareness and warning system.
