Investigators probing an engine failure on an IndiGo Airbus A320neo earlier this month have stated that the crew heard a sudden bang during climb.
The aircraft, departing Chennai on 3 January, had been climbing out of 21,000ft during a service to Kolkata.
French investigation authority BEA, citing Indian counterparts, says the starboard Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine subsequently stalled, with indications of overheating and sparks.
BEA adds that smoke emerged in the cabin, and the aircraft returned to Chennai.
“There is internal damage, confined to the [right-hand] engine,” it states.
Flight Fleets Analyzer lists the aircraft involved, VT-ITW, as having been delivered to the airline 18 months earlier, and that it has been leased from Jackson Square Aviation.
