The European Parliament has cleared the way for Single Sky legislation by approving a common reporting standard for air transport statistics. The legislation, which covers passengers, freight and mail carriage by European Union carriers, was approved on 18 December. The adoption of common statistics, which are vital before Eurocontrol can accurately map revised upper airspace corridors, was delayed by a sovereignty dispute between Spain and the UK over Gibraltar airport. The legislation includes a new amendment defining passenger load as weight load, but three other changes were rejected - a proposal to include separate listings in the cargo category for freight and mail statistics as well as individual statistics for charter and scheduled services.
